It was a successful year for the Rahr-West Art Museum, celebrating its 75th anniversary.
The museum, owned by the City of Manitowoc, had several programs that recognized the importance of the smaller museum, which still houses some big-time art.
Executive Director Greg Vadney explains to Seehafernews.com that he is very grateful to those who support the Rahr-West this year, from visiting to volunteering their time.
One of Vadney’s favorite events this year was the 75th anniversary summer Sock-Hop.
“It had music, it had classic cars, had people all dressing up in like poodle skirts, and we did a legitimate sock hop at the Rahr-West,” he described. “Kind of through it back to the 1950’s. And it showed how much people in this community love the Rahr-West.”
Vadney’s favorite special exhibit for the anniversary is up right now.
It’s the Subway Drawings done by Keith Haring in the 1980’s, which took a lot of work to bring to the Clipper City.
Vadney exclaimed, “I am so excited that we are able to share the artwork from a genuine legend in the art world with the Manitowoc community.”
The Rahr-West executive director also mentioned the extensive work that has gone into restoring the museum and the mansion, including a new roof installed last year.
The museum also wants to bring in more outdoor artwork and host more events, which could include some for aspiring artists.
The museum also wants to continue to focus on local artists.
“Part of what we are mission-driven to do is to shine a light on the artists in our community,” he noted. “And how vital they are to making Manitowoc thrive.”
But the traditions of Christmas at the Mansion and the Art of Tablesetting will remain as the museum looks to continue for 75 years.
The first meeting of the Rahr Civic Board took place in 1950, which led to the Rahr-West Art Museum becoming a city-owned museum.
In 2026, the museum will begin by presenting artwork while collaborating with the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra.
