A child was taken to a hospital after being struck by a truck while trying to board a school bus.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office was called to the 7000 block of County Highway J just before 7:25 a.m. this morning (December 22nd), with the initial report saying that the child was still lying in the roadway.
Once deputies arrived, they learned that the school bus was stopped in the northbound lane of County Highway J, with its flashing lights and stop arm extended.
The 15-year-old victim was attempting to cross the highway when a 2018 Ford F-150 being driven by a 59-year-old man from St. Nazianz hit the teen in the southbound lane.
The 15-year-old sustained only minor injuries and was taken to a local medical facility.
A second bus driver from the Valders Bus Company responded to the scene to take the student off the bus that had been attempting to stop earlier.
The truck driver was ticketed for failing to stop for a school bus and for inattentive driving.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig says the safety of our children is a shared responsibility and would like to remind all drivers to remain alert around school buses.
He finishes saying, “This includes stopping when required, slowing down around school buses, watching for children, and being patient.”
No other information is being released at this time.
