The Point Beach Nuclear Power Plant is reminding residents of its emergency evacuation procedures.
While nuclear energy is considered very safe, it is still important to know what to do if an emergency were to arise.
There are four levels of events. Unusual events are minor and do not affect the safety of the facility, while alerts are also minor, but could affect the safety of the reactor.
The public is not required to do anything in these situations.
Site area emergencies are more serious and could require an evacuation, while general emergencies are the most severe.
If the public is required to evacuate the area, a cell phone alert will be issued throughout a ten-mile radius of the plant.
It should be noted that sirens are no longer used to alert the public. If you do receive an alert, you are encouraged to turn on 1240 WOMT or 980 WCUB, as more information will be released through those channels, as well as local TV stations.
Residents are also encouraged to contact friends and family members to ensure they are aware of what is happening.
Residents of nursing homes and students at school will be taken care of by their respective institutions, and residents can pick up their loved ones at one of the emergency reception centers outside of the ten-mile radius.
