The City of Two Rivers has a new social media policy for its government-run accounts.
A resolution approved unanimously by the city council on Monday (December 15th) will allow city officials to remove or hide comments from official city social media pages if they contain advertising, malware or other virus, promote illegal activity, violates a legal ownership interest, is threatening, obscene, or has a comment with AI generated images, meme or video, that includes harassment or threats.
The general policy explains that the city cannot prevent or strictly moderate content on social media, and that it will review comments that are not protected by “free speech.”
City Manager Kyle Kordell explained that it’s important for the city to clearly define higher standards for its Facebook pages and other accounts, and that it will require professional conduct on its posts.
However, Kordell notes that the policy is not meant to deter comments or disagreements on their social media pages. This policy is not for Facebook groups like Two Rivers WI and City Hall Watch, but for the official Two Rivers WI, City Hall, Two Rivers Utilities, Two Rivers Police Department, and Two Rivers Main Street Facebook pages, among others.
More information about the policy can be found online under the December 15th city council meeting agenda at two-rivers.org/meetings.
