The City of Sheboygan’s representative in Madison is supporting a bill created by Assembly Democrats for special education reimbursements.
Representative Joe Sheehan explained that LRB-5599 would help ensure the guaranteed funds put into the 2025-2027 state budget reach the levels they were originally intended to.
The reimbursement rate for the 2025-26 school year was 42%, and the 2026-27 school year is supposed to be at 45%.
However, Rep. Sheehan says that, due to inflationary costs, the originally allocated funds will only cover 35% of special education reimbursements for the 2025-26 school year.
The Sheboygan Democrat says, “Our schools deserve the full amount that we assured them they would get. Without this bill, the Sheboygan Area School District would be short $1.47 million. This bill is a simple budget correction bill that will keep the promise the Assembly made in passing the State Budget.”
The bill is unlikely to have a hearing, since the Wisconsin Legislature is controlled by Republicans.
