The man who was shot in the back at the Viebahn Meadow Apartments in Manitowoc in November 2023 took the stand during the Clarence Holder trial yesterday (December 16th).
Devin Lawler testified that he was moving items, which could have included marijuana, while working for DoorDash on the day of the shooting.
He claimed that after he returned to his apartment, he saw a man inside wearing all black.
The victim says the man, whom he described as darker-skinned, asked him for a pen to sign for a FedEx envelope.
Lawler then testified that as he went upstairs to his apartment and opened the door, he was shot.
After that, he told jurors that he fought the man, who prosecutors say was Holder, out of the apartment before running outside and hiding in the forest.
He was later taken to a hospital and received care, saying he was “very scared” during the incident.
Assistant District Attorney Jill Vendetti then asked about his relationship with Oscar Rodriguez, a second suspect in the case.
Lawler explained that he met Rodriguez at a birthday party and that they both knew he (Lawler) had THC.
Holder’s Attorney, Russell Jones, cross-examined Lawler, talking about possessing THC and cash at his apartment, and that, according to Jones, he would use DoorDash as a way to bring THC from Michigan to Wisconsin.
There was also testimony from crime technicians with the Wisconsin DCI about DNA evidence found at the scene linking Lawler and Holder.
Day three of the trial will start this morning in Branch 1.
