A local trash and recycling collection company wants to help prevent loose trash and recycling in the streets.
This comes as Pozorski Hauling and Recycling has been in talks with City of Manitowoc officials about items ending up in neighborhoods when the wind picks up.
2nd District Alderman Chad Beeman has discussed requiring lids on city recycling bins, but it has not been approved.
Pozorski tells residents who use their service to put recyclable items into a see-through plastic bag during windy weather and then tie or tape it down.
While plastic bags can cause issues with recycling operations, Pozorski explains that they will work through the problems to keep the city clean.
However, items like paper or cardboard should not be placed with other recyclable items in a plastic bag.
They recommend using a smaller box to keep everything together.
The hauling and recycling company also says lids are available for the red 18-gallon recycling bins if a resident wants one.
However, they need to be fastened to keep from blowing away.
The question that has also been asked about recycling is whether the county would become a “single-stream.”
Pozorski explains that this would mean all recycled materials are mixed, but that results in more contamination.
Currently, the Manitowoc County Recycling Center is not built to do that
However, if things change, the company could provide wheeled trash and recycling bins.
Pozorski explains that anyone with questions can call them during their regular business hours at 920-682-3544.
