With the Manitowoc tax bills getting mailed out yesterday, Mayor Justin Nickels is giving context on a few key points.
On his personal Facebook page, Mayor Nickels noted that individual bills may be different this year, specifically because the City “completed a state-required reassessment to update all property values to reflect the current market.”
The city as a whole saw an average increase of 23% in property values, however, Mayor Nickels noted, “If your property saw around a 15% increase, you likely will not see an increase in your overall property tax bill…. Anything above that will see an increase; anything below that will see a decrease.”
The second issue he addressed was why the City’s levy increased slightly over the previous year.
There are a few pieces to this, but generally, it all boils down to increases in personnel expenses, leading to a total increase of around $1.2 million.
Mayor Nickels also stated, “My goal is to keep you informed and provide full transparency about how your tax dollars are being used and why your tax bill looks the way it does this year. I understand that changes in property taxes can be challenging, and I appreciate your engagement and feedback throughout this process.”
