The Manitowoc Police Department will be stepping up patrols for people driving high this holiday season.
The department has joined forces with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under the Drive High, Get a DUI campaign, which started on Wednesday (December 10th) and runs through the end of the year.
While many people believe driving high doesn’t affect their abilities, they are wrong.
It’s been proven that drugs like marijuana can slow reaction times, impair cognitive abilities, and make it more difficult for a driver to stay in their lane.
Unfortunately, there have been fatal accidents involving drug-impaired driving previously, and Manitowoc Police want to make sure that doesn’t happen this year.
While marijuana has been legalized medically and or recreationally in 40 states, it is still illegal to drive when impaired by drugs everywhere.
Simply put, the Manitowoc Police Department says if you plan on using drugs, including certain over-the-counter medications, do not drive.
If a person feels they can’t drive, they should find an alternative way to get home, whether that’s by a person who’s able to drive sober or by a rideshare service.
