The Republican Party of Manitowoc County is declining an invitation to speak at a Two Rivers council meeting after a representative from the Manitowoc County Democrats did during their 1st meeting of the month.
In a letter to City Manager Kyle Kordell and Council President Scott Stechmesser, County Republican Party Chairman Collin Braunel explains that he doesn’t feel a partisan organization should be speaking in front of a non-partisan government body.
Manitowoc Democrat Party Representative Connie Hendries spoke about immigration, specifically the conduct of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), during last Monday’s meeting.
She told the Two Rivers city council that they should look at what other cities have done if ICE decides to come to the Cool City.
Braunel says he understands why Kordell offered them some speaking time to be bipartisan; however, he stated, “I believe this is not only a waste of your time but also a distraction from the issues facing the citizens of the Two Rivers Community. The membership of the local Republican Party is aware of immigration issues, and some of our members have spoken to the Council in an acceptable manner, such as the public input portion of a meeting.”
Braunel finishes saying the local Republican party wishes to respect the institutions that preside over the people and not bring partisan politics into the local level.
