An Eastern Wisconsin county will host three winter-themed championships for the very first time.
Calumet County will be home to this year’s World Snowshoe Championships, U.S. Nationals Snowshoe Championships, and Open Champions starting next week on Thursday (December 18th).
It will continue through Sunday (December 21st) at the Ariens Nordic Center in Brillion.
The races are expected to attract about 500 participants and an estimated 500 to 1,000 spectators while generating about $1.2 million in economic impact.
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) is teaming up with the Ariens Sports and Entertainment Foundation and the North Country Sports Council to support the event with a $110,000 Opportunity Attraction Fund grant.
Deputy Secretary Sam Rikkers explains that the fund “gives us the ability to compete for events that show others what amazing place Wisconsin is.”
The Opportunity Attraction Fund helps Wisconsin attract opportunities and events that draw national attention, drive economic development, and bring visitors to the Badger State. Previously, the World Snowshoe Championships have been held in Austria, Canada, Japan, Italy, and Sweden, among others.
