The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is encouraging everyone to be safe this season as they head back to their favorite ice-covered lake.
But as touted every year by the DNR, no ice is safe ice. DNR Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator reminds those who like to get on the ice early in the season, conditions are unpredictable and can change quickly on Wisconsin’s rivers and lakes.
He continues saying, “No matter if you’re on foot, on a snowmobile, or in a UTV, it’s important to remember that ice is never 100 percent safe.”
Residents are also reminded that every waterbody has its own characteristics and that pressure ridges or ice heaves can form at any time.
Other reminders from the Wisconsin DNR tell ice fishers, snowmobile riders, and others active on the ice to carry a cell phone, let people know where they are going, take extra gloves, and avoid traveling into unfamiliar areas.
