The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has launched a new tool to help private well owners better understand the quality of their water.
The tool, Be Well Informed, is intended to allow well owners to properly interpret the lab results from when their well water is tested.
It is tailored to Wisconsin’s unique drinking water environment, equipped with current water guidelines and standards.
All a well owner will have to do is enter their lab results provided by a certified laboratory, and the Be Well Informed tool will generate a report that explains the results and what exactly they mean, along with providing additional resources on what the owner should do next.
The tool is being provided in partnership with the UW-Madison Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, and the UW-Madison Division of Extension.
Marty Nessman, DNR Private Water Supply section manager, said of the program, “I’m pleased that Wisconsin is able to provide this valuable tool to help private well owners make sense of their drinking water test results. Understanding the well water lab report is an important step toward correcting any water quality issues that may exist.”
Currently, Wisconsin has over 800,000 private wells responsible for providing the drinking water for approximately 25% of the state’s population.
