With winter weather hitting Eastern Wisconsin this weekend, Emplify Health by Bellin is reminding residents how to walk on slippery surfaces to reduce the risk of falls.
The local health care organization refers to the safe style of walking as the “penguin walk.”
Instead of taking long strides, it is suggested you shorten your strides and shuffle your feet, bend your knees slightly, and hold your arms out to your side, much like a penguin.
Also, leaning forward slightly will help maintain balance, and making sure your feet land flat on the sidewalk or driveway will increase friction.
Emplify Health by Bellin also suggests keeping your hands free, so if you do slip, there is a chance to catch yourself.
Then, when you get inside, either remove your shoes or make sure they are wiped clean on a carpet to reduce your risk of slipping.
