With only a couple of weeks left in the Christmas shopping season, Emplify Health by Bellin is reminding parents and others buying toys for children to keep a few things in mind.
First and foremost, make sure you keep the gifts age-appropriate.
Most toys have an age range on the packaging, and abiding by these suggestions can keep young children safe from potential choking hazards.
It is also important to read the safety labels to ensure the toys are being used properly.
Some may still be on store shelves despite having a recall in effect. You can check the Consumer Product Safety Commission website for any recalls.
According to a CPSC report, close to 155,000 children 12 years or younger were treated in emergency rooms due to toy-related injuries in 2023.
Emplify Health by Bellin Pediatrician Dr. Caitlin Barr says, “Giving a child a toy should be a joyous moment, not one that could potentially lead to a trip to the emergency room. Anyone buying toys this season should be vigilant and aware when selecting toys to ensure they are age-appropriate and safe.”
