A person has died after a small pileup on Interstate 43 in Ozaukee County.
The Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the area of I-43 at State Highway 33 in the Town of Saukville just after 3:10 yesterday afternoon (November 26th).
A semi was traveling on I-43 southbound when it jack-knifed and crossed over the median into the northbound lane.
There, a Mercedes-Benz van and a Ford Fusion crashed into the semi.
The big rig came to a final rest on I-43 northbound, blocking both lanes of traffic while the two vehicles became pinned underneath.
The driver of the Mercedes van was later pronounced dead at the scene, while the driver of the Ford suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Aurora Medical Center in Grafton.
A third vehicle, a Subaru Forester, was also traveling northbound on I-43 when it hit the semi and stopped in the area between I-43 and the exit ramp to Highway 33.
Three people were in that vehicle, and all suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries; however, all three were taken to the hospital as well.
I-43 in the area was closed for 5.5 hours and reopened at 8:35 p.m. last night.
Ozaukee County Sheriff’s deputies had help from numerous police and fire departments in the area, along with Ozaukee County Emergency Management and the Ozaukee County Crash Reconstruction Team.
