Two students studying biology at Lakeland University recently got the opportunity to present their research to their peers.
Lakeland Senior Livy Heling and junior Gretchen Augustine were both invited to participate in the 2025 Student Research Symposium at the Riveredge Nature Center in Saukville earlier this month.
Augustine’s presentation was entitled Effects of Aqueous and Dietary Exposures of Trifluoroacetate on Reproduction and Growth in Daphnia magna, while Heling’s research talk was Imaging Voltage to Study Microcircuit Contributions to Short-Term Plasticity in Mossy Cells in the Dentate Gyrus.
Both presentations were a look into both biology majors’ research that they conduct through their coursework at Lakeland University.
Each year, the Student Research Symposium invites students from across the state to present their work while supporting the next generation of scholars in Wisconsin.
Awards for the best oral and poster presentations were awarded, with Heling taking third place and receiving a cash prize for her talk on the effects of microcircuit contributions to mossy cells.
In addition to Lakeland students, the symposium included undergrad and graduate students from UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, and UW-Stevens Point.
