The Kiel Fire Department is reminding residents to keep an eye on their Thanksgiving Dinner while it’s being made.
Today (November 27th) can be the busiest day of the year for cooking-related fires, with most being preventable.
They ask cooks to stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or broiling food, and keep a close eye on anything simmering on the stovetop, and keep anything flammable like towels, oven mitts, and packaging away from heat.
If you’re using multiple burners or appliances at once, leave a pathway to avoid accidental spills or burns.
Kiel firefighters also say any deep-frying needs to be done outside and away from buildings, garages, and decks.
Also, never overfill the fryer with oil, make sure the turkey is completely thawed, and monitor temperatures closely.
