While celebrating Thanksgiving, a healthy, properly cooked meal often goes overlooked as something to be thankful for.
However, unsafe or improper kitchen techniques this holiday season can lead to foodborne illness or food poisoning for you or your family.
For this reason, the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health is offering tips to keep you and your loved ones safe from these ailments today (November 27th) and in the future.
First and foremost, cook all food thoroughly, ensuring it reaches a safe internal temperature to kill germs and bacteria.
Once prepared, keep cold foods cold and hot foods hot until you are done serving.
For dishes that contain raw eggs, you are advised to use pasteurized eggs, while uncooked or raw flour and eggs can carry harmful germs.
For your Thanksgiving turkey, never thaw it out on the counter, but rather in the refrigerator, a sink of cold water, or in a microwave.
Lastly, when preparing a Thanksgiving feast, or any meal for that matter, make sure you are regularly washing your hands with soap and water.
