The Green Bay Metro Fire Department has kicked off an annual program aimed at promoting fire safety around the holidays.
The annual Holiday Wreath Program will run from Thanksgiving today (November 27th) through January 1st, with wreaths displayed at each of the department’s nine stations.
Each wreath will start with all green lights, but for each residential fire that occurs during the holidays, a light will be replaced with a red one.
This yearly initiative is aimed at promoting fire safety for residents, as Green Bay Metro and other local fire departments generally see an uptick in fires during the holiday season.
In this time period, the Green Bay area sees an average of seven residential fires, with most attributed to careless cooking.
Last year, Green Bay firefighters responded to 11 residential fires, amounting to 11 red bulbs, with seven of those coming from cooking-related incidents.
Tips to keep you and your loved ones safe during the holidays include making sure you have working fire and carbon monoxide detectors, planning and practicing a fire plan with your family and pets, and remaining attentive and inside the kitchen when preparing meals.
However, when in doubt, get out of the house and call 911 in the event of a fire.
