A Chicago man has been sentenced in Fond du Lac County for attempted homicide.
48-year-old Lataye Smith was sentenced to 58 years in prison followed by 38 years of extended supervision yesterday after a jury previously convicted him of three domestic violence convictions with a dangerous weapon for attempted homicide, mayhem, and battery.
In 2023, the victim of the attack fled to the Fond du Lac Police Department and told an officer that they wanted to report a domestic abuse incident in the 100 block of Main Street.
A criminal complaint says the woman told them that she had gotten into an argument with Smith after he started drinking.
She eventually left the apartment and got into her car after the suspect thought she had said something.
The 58-year-old Smith then grabbed the woman by her wrist, saying in the car, “expletive, you are going to die today.”
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney says Smith used a box cutter to hurt the victim, but she was eventually able to get away and end up at the police station.
He continues saying, “Every woman and person has a right to be safe in their relationship. We will always protect women and victims of domestic violence, to ensure their safety, by prosecuting those who violate their safety.”
