The Manitowoc Public School District has identified the two elementary schools that will close as part of its consolidation plan.
As the plan sits now, Madison and Jackson Elementary Schools will close, while other schools will transition to serve new roles.
This includes turning Riverview School into an early learning center with plans to expand to full-day 4K programming.
Students at Riverview would move to Stangel, while Wilson would become the new home for 5th and 6th graders, and Washington would serve 7th and 8th graders.
Lincoln High School’s Alternative Learning programs are also slated to be relocated to the UW-Green Bay Manitowoc campus.
The MPSD board is holding a special meeting tonight (November 25th) to provide more detailed information about the plan and the reasons for the decision.
Superintendent Lee Thennes will also hold community information sessions starting next week, with one at the Lincoln High School Auditorium on Monday (December 1st) at 6:00 p.m.
The school board is not voting on the recommendations tonight, but will hear the presentation.
Thennes also explains that the recommendations to close schools will be difficult for families and students, but the district is taking steps to help explain to kids why they won’t be attending the same school next year.
MPSD has been working this year to consolidate, or shrink, the school district due to a drop in population and the need for over $160 million in repairs across all district schools.
