The Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office is recognising three men and a Sheriff’s Deputy for their efforts to save a woman.
Last Wednesday (November 19th), Jacob Mahner, Connor Roering, and Carter Roering were out looking for waterfowl when they saw a young woman who appeared visibly upset.
They decided to check on her, feeling something wasn’t right, and then saw the woman sitting on the concrete barrier of the Middle Road overpass, feet dangling over the interstate below.
The men called 911 and remained close by without escalating the situation. Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Deputy Matt Hassemer arrived within minutes and approached the woman calmly.
However, as he came, the woman shifted her body weight over the edge.
But before she fell onto the interstate, Deputy Hassemer was able to grab her arm. Seeing what was going on, Mahner and the Roerings leapt into action to help the deputy and woman as they lifted her back over the concrete barrier, despite her resistance.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig says it shows that “Manitowoc County is a great place to live- not because of the building, the roads, or the scenery, but because of the people who call it home. Time and time again, our community members step up without being asked.”
He also commended Hassemer and the three men for their heroic actions and willingness to jump in and help the woman.
If you or someone is struggling with their mental health, you can always reach out by calling or texting the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988.
Locally, there is also the Manitowoc County Crisis Hotline, which can be reached at 1-888-552-6642.
