A woman convicted of purposely starting a house on fire in the Village of Cleveland is getting probation.
During a sentencing hearing, Manitowoc County Judge Robert Dewane sentenced 54-year-old Kristin Dewar to six years of probation plus six months in the Manitowoc County Jail, with three days served.
Manitowoc County Assistant District Attorney Jill Vendetti said that both parties agreed to the sentence, although more people could have been hurt in the house fire.
However, she said Dewar is dealing with mental health issues.
Defense Attorney James Skyberg echoed the statements and also asked that Dewar be allowed to have her probation end earlier.
Judge Dewane said he would consider allowing it if the 54-year-old doesn’t get into trouble during her jail sentence.
Dewar was taken into custody by the Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Office in May last year after firefighters were called to a house fire in the 1100 block of Franklin Drive.
After an investigation, it was determined that the fire had been intentionally set and was a total loss.
A criminal complaint says the victim told deputies that Dewar was the culprit behind the fire.
After deputies asked why she did it, the 54-year-old suspect said she wasn’t sure why; she just did.
