
A person killed just after an attempted traffic stop in Marinette County has been identified.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) explained that a Niagara Police Officer tried to pull over 57-year-old Steve Mecklenburg on Wednesday, November 5th.
However, Mecklenburg fled the traffic stop in the 1000 block of Main Street at a high rate of speed and swerved into oncoming traffic. His vehicle would then hit a commercial vehicle.
While aid was rendered, the 57-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Niagara Police Officer was placed on administrative leave, as is the police of the police department.
DCI is continuing the investigation with help from the Wisconsin State Patrol, the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Rescue, and the Niagara Fire Department.
After the investigation is complete, they will present evidence to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges against the officer will be filed.
