A Kiel city council member is calling for another’s resignation after a spouse was allegedly caught dropping bags of dog waste at a local business.
During the public comment portion of Tuesday’s (November 18th) city council meeting, Mary Christel, owner of Christel’s Pet Supplies and More, explained that someone had been leaving bags of dog waste in and around the porch area of her business.
The suspect was later caught on camera and was issued a ticket for littering.
Christel said she was concerned because she’d never met the suspect, but told the council, “He’s married to Alderman (Kathy) Schutte. And I do believe that this is a vengeance for whatever the hoopla went on a few weeks ago, and we really don’t need to know. I just feel this is inappropriate, completely inappropriate.”
The hoopla she’s talking about was a September council discussion about the Kiel Business Improvement District (BID).
Alderperson Schuette claimed there was corruption in moving funds in the BID’s budget.
2nd District Alderman Jacob Guell apologized to Christel and then asked for Schuette’s resignation.
He said, “The recent behavior, conduct of Alderperson Schutte is unbecoming and I don’t think that that kind of behavior and conduct should be welcome here.”
Schuette was not at the meeting to defend herself against things said during public comment.
City Administrator Dave Funkhouser noted there are three options for her resignation: a recall election in her aldermanic district, Schuette deciding to resign, or the council calling for her removal.
Guell said he would try to get the removal option for a future meeting if Schuette does not resign.
We have reached out to Alder Schuette via email to see if she would like to respond to statements made against her.
She told us she has no comment.
