Manitowoc residents will have to pay up if they are caught using a sports bike illegally.
The common council approved an ordinance, which updates the definition of a mini bike, which is “primarily used for transportation or sport, including, but not limited to, gas, or electric motors that are not powerful enough, or too powerful, to meet the definition of a motorcycle, e-bike, or electronic bicycle.”
The ordinance also states that mini bikes cannot be ridden on sidewalks or operated on any public highway, street, alley, parkway, or land owned by the City of Manitowoc without a state permit.
If someone breaks the rules, the person could face a fine between $120 and $1,500 and possible removal and detention of the registration plate for up to 30 days.
The ordinance does not directly affect operators of regular bicycles, e-bikes, electric scooters, and personal mobility devices.
Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer tells Seehafernews.com the department also supports this ordinance update.
Mayor Justin Nickels explained last month that the city was looking at what it could do regarding regulations.
