A local State Assemblyman has introduced legislation aimed at strengthening local communities across the state.
26th District Assemblyman Joe Sheehan of Sheboygan and his Democratic colleagues have announced the Strengthening Local Communities bill package, which, if approved, gives communities more localized control over their economies.
The package includes a number of bills aimed at increasing revenue, including LRB-4792, which contains a shared revenue fix for mid-sized cities.
Rep. Sheehan says this specific portion of the package would provide the City of Sheboygan with almost $500,000 more in shared revenue payments.
On what this legislation could mean for communities, Rep. Sheehan said, “These bills put the power into the hands of the people and allow local governments to make decisions that will best fit their communities…We are removing barriers that have made it hard for our cities and towns to manage themselves.”
He added, “During my time in the legislature, and before that as Executive Director of the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation, I’ve seen firsthand how important it is to ensure local municipalities have the power to make any changes to their communities that they see fit.”
