Wisconsin Public Service is teaming up with law enforcement around the state to make sure everyone is aware of a spike in utility scams.
Fraudsters have been aggressively contacting WPS customers, threatening disconnection an immediate payment isn’t made.
They then ask for account and banking information.
More than $10,000 in losses were reported this week alone, and many of the calls have gone to businesses and religious organizations.
Residential customers have been targeted as well.
Some scammers have even shown up at targets’ homes, but refuse to show ID.
If you believe you are being targeted, you are encouraged to hang up immediately or close the door.
Then, call WPS at 800-450-7260 to verify your account status, and then call your local law enforcement agency to report the attempt.
