Manitowoc Lutheran and Watertown Luther Prep battle for the WIAA Division Three State Girls Volleyball title Saturday at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.
Both teams won semifinal matches on Friday, with the Lancers defeating defending state champion Barron in three sets. In comparison, the top-seeded Phoenix took care of Luther of Onalaska in three sets to set up Saturday’s title tilt.
Lancers Head Coach Lacey Behnke tells seehafernews.com that they wanted to keep rallies short against the Golden Bears.
” We shortened the rallies against them (Barron), which we have been good at in the past. We have a few things to clean up before Saturday, but otherwise I think this is one of our better matches of the season.”
Senior Marissa Melhorn led the Lancers with 14 kills and in total attacks with 37. She tells seehafernews.com that this team shines the brightest in big-time moments.
“Once we step on this floor, it’s truly a whole other level of play. We played with confidence sparked by the large contingent of Lancer Nation behind us. Everyone did their job very well.
Saturday’s match is the second between these schools this season, with the Phoenix coming out victorious on September 27th. Junior Ava Stuebs says this one is also a little personal for her.
“I have cousins on that team, and I’m ready to hit some balls at them. We played them before, and it wasn’t our best effort, so I’m really excited to have another chance to play them (the Phoenix). Both fan bases are going to be stoked, and it’s going to be a whole lot of fun.”
