The City of Two Rivers is giving an update on what’s happening with the land of a former manufacturing site.
City Manager Kyle Kordell explains that many residents have been asking what’s happening with the former Hamilton Manufacturing property as the city works to possibly bring the site back to productive use.
Right now, the land is owned by Thermo Fischer Scientific, which also took responsibility for environmental assessment and cleanup of the property.
The site also remains under the oversight of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources due to its industrial past.
If the city becomes seriously interested in doing anything on the property, the DNR requires additional soil testing and regulatory review to confirm the safety of the land for future use.
That means Thermo Fischer, the DNR, and the Cool City would have to work together to get the testing done, and it can be a slow process, so liability can’t fall on city taxpayers.
Kordell explains that the Hamilton site remains a vision of mixed-use redevelopment that reconnects downtown Two Rivers to the East Twin River and could create new opportunities for housing, recreation, and business investment.
The J.E. Hamilton Holly Wood Type Company was founded in 1880 and would eventually turn into Hamilton Manufacturing.
However, the plant would close in 2012 before the buildings were demolished by Thermo Fischer.
