The federal government is still withholding 50% of FoodShare benefits from families in need across the country, including in Sheboygan County.
In light of the news that families facing food scarcity in the county will be getting half their previously determined funding through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or SNAP, the Sheboygan County Food Bank has provided additional resources to families facing a gap in November.
At this time, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is awaiting additional guidance from the USDA, which will come when SNAP members’ benefits hit their accounts, albeit with a substantial decline in regular monthly benefits.
Currently, SNAP recipients can continue using their EBT cards, no funds will be removed from their accounts, and new SNAP applications are still being processed.
Members are also urged to keep their contact info current online, as DHS will notify members when their November benefits are added.
In the time since the federal government has been shut down, the Sheboygan County Food Bank has seen a stark increase in families registering for assistance, with a 24% increase in new family visits in the month of October.
With this increased need, the Food Bank has shown its appreciation to individuals and organizations in the area who have helped cover the gap that approximately 12,000 Sheboygan County residents face this month.
More information on 50% of November Snap benefits being withheld, along with donation opportunities, can be found by visiting the Sheboygan County Food Bank Facebook page.
