A bill co-sponsored by an area state representative has now become law.
3rd District Assemblyman Ron Tusler’s Senate Bill 189, now known as Wisconsin Act 40, will allow a court to enter a judgment of divorce or legal separation based on an affidavit signed by each party, helping victims of interspousal battery or domestic abuse, if certain conditions are met.
The bill would also improve judicial efficiency by requiring fewer in-person hearings, which could help reduce caseloads and costs.
Rep. Tusler previously said that by the time a final hearing occurs in a divorce case, almost no one changes their mind.
While the bill doesn’t make it easier to get a divorce, it will speed up the final steps.
State Senator Eric Wimberger of Oconto also helped introduce the bill.
