With winter just around the corner, Emplify Health by Belin is teaching residents about a common mental health issue that arises when the snow flies.
Seasonal Affective Disorder causes feelings of sadness, anxiety, and irritability, while causing a lack of energy and motivation.
Those suffering with SAD can also experience chronic sleepiness or sleeping for long periods of time without feeling refreshed, a change in appetite, especially a craving for carbohydrates, weight gain, or difficulties at work or school.
Emplify Health by Bellin Behavioral Health licensed professional counselor, Kathy Mayer notes, “There are a variety of treatments we recommend for those experiencing SAD symptoms, including light therapy and outdoor exercises. In some cases, we might pair these treatments with further counseling or antidepressants. Each person is unique, so a unique approach is taken with every SAD case.”
Those experiencing these symptoms are encouraged to contact a mental health professional.
