As the federal government shutdown drags on and federal FoodShare benefits are being withheld, an area representative is organizing an emergency food drive.
26th District Representative Joe Sheehan, in cooperation with the Sheboygan County Food Bank, will be holding the emergency food drive today (October 31st).
The drive will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Sheboygan’s Elk’s Lodge #299, located at 1943 Erie Avenue.
In a public release put out by Representative Sheehan, it was said, “In direct response to the effects the federal shutdown is having on Wisconsinites, Democrats across the state are organizing to provide critical assistance to local food banks and community partners this week.”
Sheehan is no exception, and he will be on hand throughout the food drive to take questions and discuss concerns many have as November FoodShare benefits are currently being withheld by the federal government.
Data from the Sheboygan County Food Bank states that this lapse in FoodShare or SNAP benefits could affect more than 12,000 residents in the county, with nearly half of those being children.
Those in a position to give are encouraged to donate shelf-stable items, including cereal, canned tuna, and other nonperishable items.
