Survivors include five children, Susanna (Gerry) Kane of Manitowoc; Greg (Julie) Schaus of Captain Cook, Hawaii; Ann (Chris) Hansen of Manitowoc; Sandra (Steve) Hoyt of Minneapolis; and Joe (Vicky) Schaus of Suamico. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marilyn Gulseth, of Oconomowoc; and many nieces and nephews.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lucille Becker, her husbands, John Krey and Kenneth Schaus; and one sister, Janet Wydick.
Joan was born on August 9, 1935, in Manitowoc. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, and caregiver; a longtime employee in medical records at Holy Family Hospital; and a member of a monthly card club with her best friends. She liked to plant flowers and manicure her lawn, hang sheets on the line, hold babies, chat with neighbors, sing in the church choir, and sit on her front porch and watch the world go by. She loved loons. She baked the best rhubarb bars and pecan pie anybody ever tasted and made special trips to Fleet Farm because the pecans were the freshest.
In memory of our sweet mom, bake something today—and share it with the people you love. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Manitowoc Warming Shelter in care of First Presbyterian Church.
The family would like to thank Mark Herring, MD, for decades of excellent and compassionate medical care, as well as the dedicated staffs at St. Mary’s Home and Sharon S. Richardson Community Hospice.
