The Manitowoc Public Infrastructure Committee will be looking at whether the city should require lids to be on recycling bins.
The Common Council voted on Monday (October 20th) to send a memo back to the committee about possibly requiring recycling bins to have a lid of some kind to protect from litter in the city.
2nd District Alderman Chad Beeman said he brought the proposal forward to the committee and wants to return to the committee so they can work something out.
During the committee’s meeting this month, they did not take any action after hearing comments from different people.
They first recommended that the city require hinged lids on recycling canisters, like those that are rolled to the curb to be taken out.
However, a spokesman from Pozorski Hauling and Recycling said they would have to invest a lot of money to adapt their trucks.
The county could have also had to make their recycling system more acceptable to all recyclable things, not just some items.
Operations Manager Jon Reisenbuechler said that’s not possible without a lot of money being invested.
The next Public Infrastructure Committee will be on November 5th in the council chambers.
