Lakeland University is highlighting a Manitowoc Lutheran graduate to exemplify the benefits of one of the school’s programs.
Allie Smith, a junior accounting student at Lakeland, is part of the university’s co-op program, which allows her to gain real work experience while working toward her degree.
This fall, Smith is in her fourth hands-on co-op learning experience working as an accounting intern for Curt G. Joa in Sheboygan Falls.
By semester’s end, she will have earned 12 credits through the co-op, with previous semesters spent as an operations intern at CliftonLarsonAllen, a tax internship with Corson, Peterson & Hamann SC in Sheboygan, and as a tutor helping to educate her peers.
Smith has expressed that this experience will help her in various career paths after graduation.
She also said, “This isn’t just a job, it’s so much more. I’m getting hands-on experience, and I can put this experience together to choose a field. I can take the hypothetical and put it into the real world.”
After graduating, Smith intends to earn her Certified Public Accountant credentials, which the Lakeland University Co-Op program is helping her work towards.
