The government shutdown has now reached day 23, making it the second-longest in U.S. history.
The shutdown has affected many across the country, including those who rely on SNAP FoodShare benefits.
Manitowoc County is no exception.
In the 2025 FoodWIse Year-End Report put together by Extension Manitowoc County, it was reported that 7,566 residents, or 9.3%, use SNAP, and 44% of children in Manitowoc County are eligible for free or reduced price meals.
Matt Stienstra, the Director of Advocacy and Community Engagement for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, noted in an email that the shutdown has caused the FoodShare Benefits for November to be delayed; however, it is unclear how delayed they will be.
It all depends on how long the shutdown lasts.
He did note that there is no evidence that the FoodShare cards will stop working, just that the benefits will not be added to accounts until the government reopens.
It should also be noted that federal laws prohibit the use of state funds to pay for the FoodShare benefits.
Programs that will not be impacted by the shutdown include state-run programs such as BadgerCare Plus, Medicaid, and SeniorCare.
Those with FoodShare Benefits are encouraged to keep their contact information up to date with the State of Wisconsin and to check MyACCESS for updates.
