Manitowoc Lincoln seniors Taylor Peterson and Jordin Popp have seen their outstanding careers come to an end at the WIAA State Girls’ Individual Tennis Tournament in Madison.
They were the fifth seed in the Division One doubles draw and had a first-round bye on Thursday.
Taylor and Jordin defeated seniors Julie Szatowski and Mary Gulak of Mukwonago in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 this (Friday) morning, then lost to the 12-seed Mekenna Verhagen and Aubrey McGuire of Arrowhead 6-2, 7-6 (5) in the third round this (Friday) afternoon.
Ships Head Coach Stephanie Henschel tells seehafernews.com that they (Taylor and Jordin) have nothing to be ashamed of.
“It’s not about how they played in this tournament, it’s really about the fact that their (high school) careers are over, and they’ll never get to play for Lincoln High School again.”
Henschel adds, “That’s the one thing that bothers them the most. They know, however, that they gave it their best and played well but just came up short.”
They concluded their fantastic careers at Manitowoc Lincoln with a record of 23-3, with Peterson, a four-time state qualifier, and Popp advancing to Madison three times.
A reminder that Taylor, Jordin, and coach Henschel, along with junior Megan Lamers of Roncalli/Two Rivers, a three-time state qualifier, and her coach, Kristin Lamers, will be guests on WOMT Sports Talk Monday night.
The show airs from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. at Salute to Everyone, located at 1107 South 10th Street in Manitowoc.
