The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wants the public’s feedback on a proposal for catching a particular fish in Lake Michigan.
The DNR is hosting a virtual public meeting to gather stakeholder feedback on proposed total allowable catch numbers for lake whitefish in the lake, as well as in Green Bay, for the 2026 fishing season.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, October 29th, at 6:30 p.m.
The lake whitefish population in Lake Michigan and Green Bay has undergone considerable changes over the past 15 to 20 years.
While the overall population seems stable, in recent years, fewer young fish have been returning to spawn in the northern part of the lake.
However, more lake whitefish are spawning in the Bay of Green Bay.
The DNR is seeking new methods to monitor harvests and explore ways to enhance the dual use of waters where both sport and commercial fishers pursue their catches.
The meeting will be online only via Microsoft Teams.
