Farming can often be a thankless job; however, this weekend, Wisconsinites will have the chance to pay their respects to those in the industry.
National Farmers Day will be celebrated across the country tomorrow (October 12th) and serves as a day to say thank you to all those responsible for keeping us fed, employed, and thriving, especially in the state of Wisconsin.
Manitowoc County Agricultural Educator Angie Ulness spoke with SeehaferNews.com to discuss just how integral the state’s farmers are to continued economic success.
“Long before a single seed is planted, a farmer’s work sets a powerful economic engine in motion,” she explained. “Farmers are the driver of the state’s $116.3 billion agricultural industry. In fact, 10% of those working in Wisconsin hold a job related to agriculture.”
She also took the time to explain that our state’s agriculturalists are far more than just “farmers.”
With experience as a farmer herself, Ulness stated, “A farmer is a scientist in the field, a mechanic in the workshop, a true business person, and a veterinarian in the barn. It is a life of endless hard work, driven by a deep connection to the earth and an unwavering commitment to feeding the world.”
With that in mind, it is important to show your appreciation to those responsible for so much prosperity in Wisconsin.
Locally, Ulness gave some tips on how to celebrate National Farmers Day tomorrow, or how to continually show your support.
She told us, “I would encourage all of you to get out, enjoy a farmers market, learn where your food comes from, and ultimately, thank the farmers that help be the backbones of our communities and supply food for us.”
Other ways to support local farmers include visiting pick-your-own farms, joining a CSA, or visiting a pumpkin patch or corn maze this fall season.
