Seniors Taylor Peterson and Jordin Popp of Manitowoc Lincoln have captured a sectional championship at a WIAA Division One girls tennis sectional played Thursday at the Fox Cities Racquet Club in Appleton.
They, along with Junior Megan Lamers of Roncalli/Two Rivers, are all returning to the WIAA State Girls Individual Tennis Tournament in Madison next week.
Peterson and Popp punched their ticket by defeating a team from Beaver Dam 6-3 and 6-0.
This means that Peterson has qualified for state all four years of her career, while Popp has qualified for state three consecutive years, the first two competing in singles.
In the semifinals, they defeated a duo from Hartford 6-0 and 6-0, then won a tough three-set match against a doubles team from Neenah 7-6 (3), 2-6, and 10-7 to claim the sectional title.
Meanwhile, Megan Lamers punched her second straight trip to Madison by defeating Brealyn Schelinger of Slinger 6-2, 6-4 in an opening round singles match. She qualified last year in doubles with her sister, Madison, who has since graduated.
The WIAA State Tournament begins next Thursday in Madison.
