A group of Republicans in the Wisconsin Assembly, including an area state representative, is looking to close a loophole on THC.
27th District Representative Lindee Brill, who represents western Sheboygan County and the City of Kiel, has introduced a bill that would stop existing loopholes in the state’s definition of hemp, which she says allows dangerous, psychoactive THC-laced products to be in Wisconsin.
The Sheboygan Falls Republican says while delta-9 THC remains a controlled substance, the statutory definition of “hemp” includes a loophole, which allows the legal sale of other psychoactive cannabinoids derived from hemp.
The bill would outlaw cannabinoids like HHC, delta-8, delta-10 THC, and others.
According to Brill, the proliferation of hemp-derived products poses an active threat to the public, which includes a sharp rise in delta-8 THC poisonings in young children, many of which have led to hospitalizations.
She finishes by saying, “For me, this is deeply personal. Having worked in drug and alcohol addiction, I have seen firsthand the devastating effect that the proliferation and celebration of drugs have had on real people.”
