Leaders from across Great Lakes communities met to unveil a new economic plan for the future of the region.
The Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative launched its Economic Transformation Action Plan entitled A Blueprint for Economic Growth and Freshwater Stewardship in the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Region in New York City on Wednesday (September 24th).
Leaders from across the region, including the Mayor of Sheboygan, Ryan Sorenson, stated that the action plan provides a 10-year blueprint that will position the area as the Fresh Coast Economic Corridor and one of North America’s fastest-growing economies.
The plan focuses on the Great Lakes being the world’s largest supply of surface fresh water in a world where water scarcity continues to be a problem.
By 2035, the plan aims to bring half a million new businesses to the region, create 18 million jobs, avoid any percentage increase in consumptive water loss, and more.
With 84% of North America’s surface freshwater resources contained in the Great Lakes, the Cities Initiative believes the region is poised to lead North America’s next era of economic growth, with sustainability and conservation at the forefront.
SeehaferNews.com has reached out to Mayor Sorenson, the Co-Chair of the Cities Initiative Board of Directors, to discuss how this economic action plan will positively impact Lake Michigan coastal communities like Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and others.
