Pinecrest Historical Village will be turned into a Civil War encampment this weekend.
The Manitowoc County Historical Society is hosting Civil War Remembered starting on Saturday (September 27th) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Guests will be able to meet with famous figures of the past and experience firsthand a turbulent time in the nation’s history as the North and the South fought each other.
Program Director Hannah Harvey explains to SeehaferNews.com that it’s nostalgia that drives people back to the event each year, plus their love of history, even beyond the battles.
“What’s growing in popularity, at least among reenactors and even some of our demographic that visits as well is the stuff you don’t read about in the history books as much,” she explained. “Like your United States Sanitary Commission and Christian Commission, which both kind of were aid association that pre-date the Red Cross that did similar things.”
There will be numerous activities, including visiting the Union, Confederate, and Civilian Camps. There will also be military demonstrations going on.
Civil War Remembered also includes marching and drilling practices, allowing residents to visit historic trade shops and homes, and the daily Battle Reenactment, which takes place at 1:00 p.m. each day.
Harvey calls it the main event that everyone comes to see.
“We have a couple of different units represented,” she stated. “We have four different artillery groups that come. So we can make a lot of noise.”
For those who want to learn about what happens after battle, there are a few tickets left for the Civil War Evening Lantern Tour and Dance.
Harvey explains that a lot of history and events happened as the sun set for the day, and it can be very moving.
“To experience the battlefield at night, to experience kind of a little sampling of home life as family settle in for the evening,” she notes. “And then the whole thing ends at the dance were we will call you out and hoping you can jump in on some old time Civil War dances with us as well.”
Admission for both days costs as much as it would to get in normally.
It’s $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, $10 for children 4-17, and children under four and members get in for free.
