Some residents can get a final look at a historic church that will be demolished soon.
St. Francis of Assisi Parish announced yesterday (September 22nd) that it is the end of an era for St. Boniface Catholic Church, a landmark of faith in the community.
The parish will be having final walkthroughs at St. Boniface on Thursday (September 25th) at 5:00 p.m. before it is demolished.
This comes after years of efforts to keep the Gothic-style church open following the announcement of demolition in 2020.
A group of parishioners had attempted to uphold the church’s status by appealing the decision, but the Dicastery for the Clergy in Rome at the Vatican sustained Bishop David Ricken’s decree, which had permitted St. Francis Parish to choose what to do with St. Boniface.
In this case, it means the church will be knocked down in the future.
The decision was made by the Roman Catholic Court, which earlier this year affirmed the ruling from the Diocese of Green Bay, allowing Bishop David Ricken to retain his decree.
In it, he said the church is “no longer necessary for the care of souls in the community, and it continues to be a fiscal burden with the building and artifacts in danger of decay and damage.”
St. Boniface is located at S. 10th and Marshall Street and has not been used for regularly scheduled masses in over 20 years.
An official deconstruction case has not been announced.
