A local representative is supporting a bill that would allow teens who were adopted to see their original birth certificate.
25th District Representative Paul Tittl of Manitowoc explains that the bill has had a hearing in committee, but not a full vote.
If signed into law, Rep. Tittl’s bill would allow a child over 18 to get a copy of the original birth certificate they got from the parent who gave birth to them, because they get a whole new birth certificate when they are adopted.
The Manitowoc Republican says the State of New Hampshire passed a similar bill.
“In a 10-year period, over 1,700 people request their original birth certificate,” he noted.
Those who would get the original certificate could also decide if they do or do not want their original parents to get in contact with them.
According to Senate Bill 388, the only way for an adopted person to get their original birth certificate is for the parents to allow it.
The bill would eliminate language that allows for access to the adoptee’s original birth certificate when access is granted by the birth parents in an affidavit.
