A Manitowoc building constructed in the 1920s is coming down.
The Manitowoc Common Council unanimously approved a demolition/razing permit from A.C.E. Building Service for the demolition of the former Masonic Temple at Chicago Street.
City documents indicate that the demolition will facilitate the relocation of a drive-thru at Bank First, while also adding green space and improving sight lines.
The Masonic Lodge is over 100 years old, having been built in 1923.
It has historically served as a social, recreational, and fraternal organization facility, but the Wisconsin Historical Society does not list it as a historic site.
The building is noted as the largest public building in the area, featuring Neo-Classical architecture with iconic columns and a brick structure.
Manitowoc’s Community Development Department found no features of historic significance that would merit preservation, according to the documents.
While demolition is not generally preferred, the Bank First and green space project supports the city’s economic viability.
Manitowoc’s Community Development Authority first approved the applications for demolition in August.
