Horizon Elementary School in Plymouth has received a major upgrade to help students and pay homage to a former principal.
The Plymouth School District has shared that the sensory room at Horizon underwent an overhaul to better serve students who may need to focus before the school day, calm themselves after recess, or take a break after getting upset.
While the sensory room provides support for those with sensory processing differences, Horizon Educational Specialist Olivia Lanser says, “The hope is that all kids can use it proactively as they learn to self-regulate.”
The room features items such as soothing color-changing bubble lights, fidget toys, a small tent, and much more.
That includes the new centerpiece, a celestial-themed mural painted by Wall It Creations, a Darth Vader chair, and an “Educational Jedi Master” picture.
The last two items pay respect to the former Horizon Principal Chris Helmer, who passed away last year after a battle with cancer.
Lasner credited Helmer with the upgrade, stating he had thoughts of improving the sensory room; however, those talks were tabled during his fight with cancer.
After his passing, donations from the Helmer family and All My Friends were able to turn his hopes of an upgrade into a reality for the students at Horizon Elementary.
